Coding Specialists in the area of Health Information Management (HIM) translate health care provider diagnoses and procedures into numerically coded classification systems, for billing, research, statistical, and administrative purposes.

At present, the demand for entry-level coders is extremely high, especially in acute care facilities. Other employment opportunities can be found in:

  • Medical clinics
  • Veterinary hospitals
  • Long term care facilities
  • Behavioral health facilities
  • Health care corporations

The HIM Coding Specialist Certificate program is based on ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding systems. Completion of the certificate allows students to obtain entry-level skills in healthcare coding, and the opportunity to continue to earn the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Health Information Management.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers two certification exams for coders: Certified Coding Specialist and Physician Based Certified Coding Specialist. It is highly recommended that recent HIM graduates acquire a minimum of three years experience prior to writing these non-entry based exams.

Next Steps

This program requires 31 credit hours of course work:

We recommend Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy and Physiology I (or equivalent) be completed, before enrolling in any HIM Coding courses.

High school diploma or GED is required for admission.

The Health Information Management Coding Specialist Certificate requires completion of English S111.

Placement test scores determine where students start in Math and English courses.

We recommend you take your placement tests in advance to assess your abilities. Knowing your English and Math skill levels is an important part of selecting the right courses for your choice of study.

For detailed information on specific requirements for this program, please refer to the most current UAS academic catalog.
