Networking 

Rick MacDonoldRick McDonald joined UAS Ketchikan in August 2003. He previously taught CCNA & CCNP courses at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina and at Forsyth Technical College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Rick received an M.A. in Educational Technology from Gonzaga University and holds Net+, CCNA, Cisco Certified Academy Instructor  (CCAI) and CCNP certifications.

Web-based learning
  • The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan offers a web-based learning experience for students to achieve the CCNA certification in one academic year.
  • The Cisco Certified Networking Associate/Cisco Certified Networking Professional - Distance Learning program focuses on serving rural students throughout  Alaska.
  • Using the latest Internet technology, students practice on actual router and switch hardware from their home just as if they were in the lab on campus.
  • A NETLAB® is effectively utilized to deliver student access to labs for the Cisco courses.

Semester Offerings

UAS Ketchikan is a certified Cisco Networking Academy member. Each semester these courses are offered via distance. These courses are designed to prepare students for the CCNA exam.

Additional course work in relevant areas is offered on an intermittent basis to complement the core group of networking classes.

Students need strong computer skills and access to reliable and fast dial-up (100K or better) modems to be successful in these courses.

Completion offers a solid foundation and will assist a student to obtain an entry level job in the computer networking field.

CCNA -  Certified Cisco Network Associate Course  Sequence

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of computer programming before starting the CCNA series.

Introduction to Networking and the OSI Reference Model (CIOS 241)

First course in the CCNA series. Provides an in-depth study of fundamental computer networking and data communications concepts essential in planning and implementing a network within an organization.

Internetwork Router Configuration and Design (CIOS 244)

Second course in the series. Provides an in-depth study of Router Theory, TCP/IP, IP addressing; and routing protocols. Router components, setup, startup, configuration and the router operating system included.

Local Area Network Configuration and Design (CIOS 247)

Third course in the series. Provides an in-depth study of switches, Local Area Network (LAN) and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) design, configuration and maintenance.

Wide Area Network Configuration and Design (CIOS 248)

Fourth course in the series. Provides an in-depth study of Wide Area Networks (WANs), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), Point-to-Point Protocols (PPP), and Frame Relay design, configuration, and maintenance.
