Dale Miller

Captain Miller has worked his way up the hawespipe, beginning as an Ordinary Seaman and working his way up to Able Bodied Seaman on various coastal freighters, and Alaska Marine Highway vessels as well as a 25,000 ton container ship. He then worked for eight years as a Chief Mate / Relief Captain aboard the M/V Polar Venture, a 151 Ton (669 Ton ITC) Coastal Freighter and the M/V Sea Trader, a 360 Ton (1200 Ton ITC) Coastal Freighter. In his off time he has filled in as Mate aboard several tugboats and as Captain on small passenger vessels. Captain Miller is currently the Marine Transportation Department Head and lead professor of Marine Transportation at the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Campus. He is USCG approved to teach every Maritime course that the University offers with the exception of Fire Fighting and has been the driving force behind the rapid expansion of the program, increasing the Marine Transportation Department's curriculum offerings four-fold in his 7 years as department head. For recreation, Captain Miller enjoys hiking and sailing his 24 and 30 ft sailboats throughout Southeast Alaska.

Neil Nickerson

Captain Nickerson has recently joined the UAS faculty as our Juneau Maritime Professor. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our program and through his efforts has expanded the UAS Maritime presence in Juneau immensely. Captain Nickerson is a retired USCG officer and has many years of command experience aboard a variety of USCG Cutters. Upon his retirement from the USCG, he worked as a Mate aboard towing vessels with Crowley Maritime in Valdez and as a relief Mate/Chief Mate for the Alaska Marine Highway System. Captain Nickerson is also the owner/operator of Alaska Sailing Charters, commanding a 49 ft ketch on expedition, sightseeing and dinner charters. In his spare time, Captain Nickerson enjoys surfing, kayaking and travel - especially to destinations with big waves!

Diana Chaudhary

Ms. Chaudhary was employed with the Department of the Army as a GS-12 Traffic Management Specialist in the 80's and was an actively drilling US Naval Reserve Officer for over 10 years. In the mid 1990's she took time off for child rearing and was inactive in the industry. Ms. Chaudhary worked as an Adjunct for UAS from 2006-2008 and joined UAS as Maritime Coordinator in 2008. She keeps the department running smoothly and is instrumental in scheduling and marketing of classes.
