Why do I have to pay fees?^
The State of Alaska provides about 60 percent of the money needed to run the University of Alaska. The university is responsible for the remaining 40 percent.
Tuition and fees are the main source of revenue for the university. Many fees cover the cost of supplies or materials for courses. Some fees cover the replacement costs of technology and software.

What fees do I pay?^
UA fees: These fees are charged to all students throughout the University of Alaska system.
Student government fee: $1 per credit hour. Supports students’ lobbying efforts in the capitol; welcome-back events; finals events; scholarships; and other student activities.
Technology fee: $5 per credit hour; maximum of $60. A local committee of faculty, staff and students allocates this fund to purchase technology and equipment that directly benefits students.
Network charge: 2 percent assessed on tuition, for credit and non-credit courses; minimum of $2 per credit hour charged on courses.
Lab/materials fees: These fees vary from course to course and cover the cost of providing lab materials and supplies.
Computer lab fee: $15 per credit hour. Fees buy lab supplies and go into replacements and upgrades of in the CIOS lab computers.
Science materials fees: support purchases of materials, supplies, services and equipment for specific lab and non-lab classes.
Distance class fees: a distance fee is charged to students in classes offered via distance delivery. A mailing fee is charged to students outside Ketchikan when books and materials are sent to them.
The distance fee is $40 for 100/200-level courses and $75 for 300/400-level courses. This levy supports distance delivery technology and services.
The distance mailing fee is $15 per class and covers most of the cost of mailing textbooks and materials to students outside of Ketchikan.
Additional fees: Additional fees may be applied by campuses outside of Ketchikan. These fees may not be noted on the fee schedule under each course. It is important to contact the UAS Ketchikan campus Business Office for the exact cost of your courses.
