MT 239
100 Ton and OUPV (6 Pack) Course
This course is for anyone with boating experience interested in obtaining a US Coast Guard license. Course topics include navigation, seamanship, safety and rules of the road.
The US Coast Guard (USCG) has approved the course and instructor for third party testing. A UAS Certificate of Completion is accepted as a substitute for testing by the Coast Guard. Students should plan to spend time studying on their own, in addition to the 80 hours of classroom instruction and it is recommended that students begin reading the Rules of the Road prior to the beginning of the class.
After completing the course, students have one year to fulfill other USCG requirements including documenting sea time, First Aid/CPR, physical examination, drug test, character references and proof of citizenship.
MT 240
Course fee includes books and plotting tools. Trainees are responsible for obtaining their own physical exam, drug tests, first aid/CPR certification, documentation of sea time and other USCG license requirements. Class fills quickly, students are advised to register early.USCG approved Upgrade course from Master 25, 50 or 100 ton to Master not more than 200 ton.
MT 225
The Certificate of Completion for this course is accepted as a substitute for testing by the USCG. Students learn rules of the road, ship nomenclature, knots, splices and general seamanship topics.
MT 129
Required for mariners on commercial vessels over 200 Tons sailing outside the boundary line. This course is USCG approved and meets requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 95. The four modules of the course are Personal Survival, Fire Fighting, First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.
MT 244
Intended for Mariners responsible for cargo and the safety of passengers in emergency situations. This course meets the STCW Crisis Management & Human Behavior requirements including Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety & Hull Integrity Training for officers on Ro-Ro Passenger vessels.
VTEC 033
This USCG approved STCW course meets requirements for mariners working on passenger vessels. It teaches practical skills necessary to deal with emergency situations aboard passenger vessels.

MT 288
Raingear and boots required. USCG certified course complies with STCW 95. Consists of class and practical training with fast rescue vessel.
VTEC 032
This course is USCG approved for third party testing and upon successfully completing the course students receive a UAS certificate. The license is valid only on the lakes and rivers designated by Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection for Western Alaska. Coast Guard licensing requirements that are not included in this course are First Aid/ CPR training and 90 days sea time.
VTEC 032
Students will learn basics of electronic charting using Nobeltec software.
MT 120
Learn how to properly maintain and winterize your outboard engine! This class provides an introduction to outboard systems that need maintenance and upkeep for efficient operation. Ignition, carburetion, power head and lower unit systems will be studied with an emphasis on preventative maintenance.
MT 230
Meets 46 CFR 12.10-3(a)(6) and 46 CFR 12.10-5 for endorsement for Lifeboatman, & Section A-VI/2 & Table A-VI/2-1 of Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping for Seafarers 95. Raingear and boots required. USCG approved course provides training in the use of lifeboats, life rafts and survival gear.
MT 232
Meets requirements for uninspected tow vessels greater than 26 feet. U.S. Coast Guard approved. Training in basic radar theory. Topics include navigation and collision avoidance. Emphasis placed on plotting techniques. Utilizes state-of-the-art radar simulator.
VTEC 035
This course is designed for those who remember the basics of rapid radar plotting. The final exams consist of two paper plots and two simulator plots plus a short voyage on the simulator maneuvering in traffic. Students must get an 80% to pass the course.
The course is US Coast Guard approved for 8 hours, so plan on being in class that long. UAS Ketchikan offers a 2 and 3 day radar renewal course for those who desire more review. A good book to review before class is: Real Time Method of Radar Plotting by Max H. Carpenter.
VTEC 034
This 2-3 day radar renewal course is for mariners who want more time and instructor assistance reviewing rapid radar plotting.
The final exams consist of two paper plots and two simulator plots, plus a short voyage on the simulator maneuvering in traffic. These exams must be passed with a score of 80% or better.
A good book to review before class is: Real Time Method of Radar Plotting by Max H. Carpenter.
VTEC 033
Anchors, Anchoring, Anchorages:
Explorations of anchor styles and function, principle and theory of recommended anchoring practices and applicability to SE Alaska conditions. Discussion and sharing of favorite anchorages and boating destinations in the southern SE panhandle.
Marine Batteries & Electrical Systems:
Understanding construction, operation, maintenance and testing of lead/acid batteries. Explore theory and practice of working with low voltage DC electrical systems.
Small Craft Radar:
For both recreational and commercial boaters, this 2.5 hour radar class covers the basics. Learn to make the most of your radar for collision avoidance and navigation. Students get to practice on a state of the art radar simulator.
Fire Extinguisher Class:
We all know what they look like but have you ever wanted to actually get to use one in a training situation? Here’s your chance! This one and a half hour evening class discussing and using fire extinguishers would be perfect for anyone owning a boat which has a fire extinguisher aboard, or for anyone seeking an opportunity to actually operate a fire extinguisher. There is a proper way, to use a fire extinguisher and it could save your boat or building!
Navigation:
"This introduction to navigation course will meet three evenings and cover the basics of reading marine charts, Rules of the Road and communication using VHF Radio. Students will practice their new knowledge using computer simulation".
Immersion Suits:
This 1.5 hour evening class covers proper use and care of immersion suits and other personal floatation devices. Bring your PFD's to try in the pool or borrow ours. Experience what it would be like to have to get in an immersion (gumby) suit. This is a class for all ages and any boater wishing to have a better understanding of the safety equipment aboard their vessel. Students need to bring clean clothing to wear in the pool and a change of clothes. (Chances are, you won’t fall overboard in your bathing suit we will wear regular pants and shirts in the pool.)
MT 119
Learn to safely operate a skiff in Alaskan waters. The course covers navigating, trip planning, line and vessel handling including one practice session using a skiff in the water. Rain gear may be required.
