Safety is at the heart of all the training we do at the UAS Center for Mine Training. All classes are taught by highly qualified University of Alaska Mining and Petroleum Training Service (MAPTS) instructors with years of industry experience.

Safety classes can be taught at the UAS Center for Mine Training in Juneau or at a facility of your choosing throughout Southeast Alaska.

MSHA Part 48a Underground Inexperienced New Miner

This course, delivered by MSHA approved cooperative instructors, provides 32 hours of classroom instruction designed to train and certify persons who work in an undergound mine, engaged in the extraction and production process, who are regularly exposed to mine hazards; or who is a maintenance or service worker employed or contracted by the operator who works for frequent or extended periods [MSHA 30 CFR Part 48 Subpart A].

This training includes but is not limited to; Statutory Rights of Miners and their Representatives; Authority and Responsibilities of Supervisors; Intro to Mine Rules and Procedures for Reporting Hazards; Self Rescue/Respiratory Devices; Mine Transportation, Signals, and Communication Systems; Intro to the Mining Environment; Mine Maps, Escapeways, Emergency Evacuation, Barricading; Roof and Ground Control, Ventilation Plans; Health and Safety Standards (HazCom, Physical and Chemical Hazards, Dust, Noise, Newly Assigned Tasks); Hazard Recognition and Avoidance; Prevention of Accidents, Cleanup and Rockdusting; Electrical Hazards; First Aid; Mine Gases; Explosives, Fire-Fighting; Rigging, Slings.  Students who successfully complete this training will receive a MSHA 5000-23 and a First Aid/CPR card.
