Welcome to your First Year Experience at UAS!

Spring 2018 Orientation will be held on Friday, January 12th and Saturday, January 13th.

Whether you are new to college or transferring to UAS, we look forward to welcoming you and providing the support you need to reach your goals. Our Orientation goals are two-fold: to introduce you to resources that will support your success at UAS and to connect you to other people.

All new full-time students (12 credits or more, freshman, transfer, or exchange) are required to attend Orientation, although all students, regardless of credit level, are welcome. Fall orientation and Spring orientation are two-day events and cost $100. This charge will be placed on your student account.

Orientation is a great opportunitiy to kick off your first full year at UAS, identify important resources, and meet new people.

If you have a question about Orientation that is not answered on this page, please contact us at first.year@uas.alaska.edu

Spring 2018 Schedule

Orientation is a two day event, with extra optional activities outside of mandatory sessions, including a trip to Mendenhall Glacier and a tour of Juneau. Plan for full days (8 a.m.–5 p.m.). We build some flexibility into our schedules to allow students to finish up admissions, course enrollment and financial aid tasks.

What if I cannot attend every session?

We understand that some incoming students may have scheduling conflicts. Your goal should be to attend as much of Orientation as possible. There are not separate fees or fee reductions if you can only attend part of the event.

What should I bring?

Orientation is active, so be sure to dress comfortably and wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in. In Southeast Alaska, layers are always recommended. Be prepared for rain and snow, as well. We will provide ice grippers for shoes.

What do I recieve at Orientation?

All Orientation participants receive a Swag bag when they check in - we like to kick off your student experience at UAS with tools that you'll find helpful and items that will help you show off your pride as a UAS student. Check out the items you'll receive when you start Orientation:

  1. Cooler-Style bag that you can use to go grocery shopping
  2. Choice of Travel Mug or Aluminum Water Bottle
  3. Orientation Lanyard
  4. One Campus, One Book text for the year - Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
  5. UAS Notebook
  6. A copy of our UAS New Student Guide, which will help you navigate your UAS Experience

Parent Orientation Sign-up

We are pleased to offer Parent/Guardian Orientation each fall! This is a great time for parents/guardians to meet staff and get questions answered. Parent Orientation for Fall 2017 will be on Friday, August 25th beginning at 8 am in the Glacier View Room of the Egan building (room 221). UAS will provide a light breakfast and full lunch.

Please note: Student orientation is designed for students only, so parents who arrive on Orientation day will be directed to join Parent Orientation activities. Parents, guardians, and siblings are encouraged to explore our campus and community during the sessions while your student begins building new relationships with peers.

Information regarding the Orientation schedule and reminders will be sent to the email you provide.
